Aldelia is hiring a Veterinary Officer based at the Makerere University Biological Field Station (MUBFS), located in Kanyawara within the Kibale National Park, Uganda. While the primary duty station is Kanyawara, the role extends support to the broader Kibale Conservation Area and potentially other surrounding regions.
The successful candidate will work in close coordination with other veterinarians, following a staggered schedule to ensure consistent, year-round wildlife health surveillance and rapid response to emergencies. The veterinarians are responsible for comprehensive health monitoring of chimpanzees and other wildlife, contributing to conservation and disease prevention efforts.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Regular health monitoring of wild chimpanzees and other mammals
• Necropsies of deceased primates and other wildlife.
• Emergency response including snare removal interventions that requires darting
• Management of laboratory, including sample collection, storage, and analysis in association with the above duties.
• Senior member of the project’s management team responsible for report writing, budget maintenance, and enforcing health and hygiene protocols with staff
• Development and management of One Health community outreach programs (i.e., vaccine clinics, spay/neuter clinics, educational talks, etc.)
• Work closely with the Uganda Wildlife Authority and other stakeholders in the region

QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS
• Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary medicine
• Registered with the Veterinary regulatory body in Uganda
• Experience working with wildlife
• Experience working in field conditions
• Proficiency in basic laboratory techniques including sample collection, storage, and analysis
• Good physical condition, resilience against stress, and highly motivated and organized
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work independently and also as a team
• Good oral and written English
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace (Gmail, Drive, Docs, Sheets, etc.)
• Proof of COVID-19 full vaccination and a negative TB test.
• Preferred qualifications:
• Experience as working as a wildlife veterinarian
• Experience working with primates, preferably chimpanzees
• Experience with darting animals in the field
• Experience performing necropsies, including sample collection and storage
• Experience in health monitoring and basic data collection
