The Need
For 25 years, IJM has pioneered the work to protect vulnerable people from violence. As we grow to expand our impact to protect 500 million people globally from violence by 2030, we are seeking to recruit a Communications Associate based in Kampala.
Job Summary: Plays a central role in developing, managing, and disseminating strategic content that amplifies key messages and stories aligned with organizational goals. This role ensures effective coordination across teams, platforms, and stakeholders to support advocacy, engagement, and brand consistency through digital asset management, media relations, and storytelling.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine and appraise content strategies to ensure alignment with program goals, audience engagement, and brand standards across digital and traditional media platforms.
- Conduct and oversee digital asset management (DAM) systems, ensuring assets are properly tagged, categorized, accessible, and maintained for optimal performance and global usage.
- Take the lead in gathering, and developing high-impact program success stories, including coordinating interviews, conducting photo and video shoots, editing multimedia content, and producing engaging reels and other digital storytelling assets
- Identify and disseminate compelling stories and media materials that elevate survivor voices, support advocacy campaigns, and engage diverse audiences locally and globally.
- Compare and reconcile media engagement plans with emerging trends, stakeholder needs, and program objectives to sustain relevance and impact.
- Advise and train internal teams and partners on communications best practices, system usage, and strategic messaging to foster collaboration and consistent delivery.
Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic communication plans that align with organizational goals and effectively engage diverse audiences across digital and traditional platforms.
- Proficiency in content creation and digital asset management, including tagging, categorizing, and curating multimedia assets for optimal accessibility, discoverability, and brand consistency.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills, with the capacity to build and sustain relationships with internal teams, media professionals, and external stakeholders to amplify messaging and drive engagement.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly and compellingly to varied audiences, including policymakers, partners, and the public.
- Ability to anticipate communication needs and recommend solutions, including identifying trends, managing risks, and adapting strategies to enhance impact and ensure alignment with program objectives.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in media, journalism, communications, broadcasting or related field.
- At least five (5) years’ relevant experience in media broadcasting, public relations or communications (experience working in media reporting within the justice sector preferred).
- Strong experience in development, analysis and implementation of communication and media strategies, and tracking of media trends.
- Demonstrated active involvement in social media channels (including X(Twitter), Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Blogging and SnapChat) with verifiable digital presence.
- Experience developing and managing social media publishing and monitoring software.
- Proficient in group facilitation, with demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with partners, staff and colleagues with a high level of tact, diplomacy and confidentiality.
- Demonstrated ability to respond effectively and with an appropriate degree of urgency to the needs of a dynamic team, internally and externally.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Valid driving license.
- Computer literate – highly proficient in Microsoft Office programs and publishing software packages.
Critical Qualities
- Mature Christian faith as defined by the Apostles’ Creed.
- Proven ability to present complex data and information in a clear and compelling manner to a wide range of stakeholders.
- Experience with Adobe Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) or similar program.
- Exceptional expertise in photography and videography.
- Fluency in English and at least one local language, with excellent writing and speaking in both.
- Computer literate with proficiency in MS Word, Outlook.
