On behalf of our client in the Manufacturing Sector, we are looking for competent and experienced Civil Engineer tobe based in Kampala.
Reports To: Project Head
Number of Positions: One (1)
Duty Station: Kampala, Uganda.
Job Summary: The Civil Engineer is Responsible for coordinating, supervising, and monitoring all civil and structural works associated with the company Processing Plant Project, including the construction of manufacturing facilities, industrial buildings, equipment foundations, auxiliary plants, and associated infrastructure. The role involves working closely with project consultants, contractors, and multidisciplinary project teams to ensure that civil works are executed in accordance with approved drawings, technical specifications, project schedules, budgets, quality standards, and health and safety requirements.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise civil and structural works associated with the project, including site development, earthworks, equipment foundations, factory buildings, steel structures, roads, drainage, and associated infrastructure
- Coordinate with civil consultants, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, contractors, and subcontractors to ensure effective planning and execution of construction activities.
- Review engineering drawings, technical specifications, construction methodologies, and contractor submissions to ensure compliance with approved designs and project requirements
- Monitor daily construction activities, track progress against approved schedules, and identify potential delays, constraints, and corrective actions
- Supervise civil contractors and subcontractors to ensure construction works comply with approved drawings, specifications, quality standards, and health and safety requirements
- Measure and verify completed works, maintain accurate site records, and support the review of contractor progress claims and payment applications
- Coordinate with mechanical, electrical, and other teams to ensure proper integration of equipment foundations, embedded items, underground services, and other civil interfaces
- Conduct regular site inspections to monitor construction progress, workmanship, material quality, and compliance with approved quality assurance and quality control procedures
- Review and monitor contractor method statements, inspection and test plans, material approvals, and other construction related documentation
- Identify technical issues, construction constraints, and opportunities for cost optimisation, and coordinate with relevant stakeholders to implement appropriate solutions
- Prepare and maintain project documentation, including progress reports, site records, inspection reports, construction drawings, and as-built documentation
- Support compliance with applicable statutory approvals, construction regulations, and occupational health and safety requirements
- Participate in project coordination meetings and provide regular updates on construction progress, outstanding issues, risks, and corrective actions
- Support inspection, testing, completion, and handover activities for civil and structural works, including the close-out of outstanding defects and documentation
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
- Minimum five years of relevant experience in civil engineering and construction projects, preferably involving industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, or large-scale infrastructure developments
- Practical knowledge of earthworks, reinforced concrete structures, industrial equipment foundations, structural steel buildings, road construction, and drainage systems
- Ability to read, interpret, and review civil and structural engineering drawings, technical specifications, and construction documentation
- Sound understanding of construction methodologies, quality assurance and quality control procedures, and occupational health and safety requirements
- Experience in supervising contractors, monitoring construction progress, measuring completed works, and verifying contractor payment claims
- Working knowledge of project planning, scheduling, cost monitoring, and construction measurement procedures
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, with working knowledge of AutoCAD and project scheduling software
- Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary project team
- Ability to manage multiple construction activities and priorities while maintaining compliance with project schedules, quality standards, and safety requirements
